EA does not own their rights, thus they can't have cards of those players (same story with others like Chris Bosh - after he retired they lost his rights, and why someone like Charles Barkley doesn't appear in the game either).

Kobe did have cards in the beta of this game but he retired before this game officially came out July 5th, 2016 so EA lost his players union rights which means they have to acquire his right individually as for MJ he signed an exclusive contract with 2K to only have his likeness used in their games back in 2010 so EA can't sign him if they wanted to and since EA's basketball games are much less profitable than 2K's they don't want to shell out the money needed to sign big names and some guys don't want to be in games or want to much like Barkley and Miller

Ah i remember that Kobe card. Made me a lot of coins and was a great investment at the time as his price trippled in value. When supply and demand actually influenced prices.

There were several but the retirement cards like the 75 and 89 came out right after that regular season ended do apparently they didn't lose his right until after the entire season was over after the Finals

Oh, yeah, those S1 Kobe cards were sick, I remember I had the Big Man lineup Kobe card and paired him with the Elite Trophy master Shaq, those were some great times!
